If your toddler feels more comfortable on the little potty, by all means, let them AND THEN build on it. Just give yourself (and them) enough time to gain the confidence on the big potty before starting school. Prereadiness Signs: 1. Seeking privacy while using their diaper - hiding or turning away from you when they go 2. Telling you they are currently going or just went - indicates more awareness of their bladder and control 3. Telling you they need a diaper change Things to do before starting potty training: 1. Start talking about and normalizing the potty to your toddler. The unknown is scary! Make sure they know the purpose of the potty, we use it to urniate or dedicate and then it takes it away for us. 2. Read lots of books about potties and potty training before starting, again just to create more normalcy and set expectations for what the expect. Use the 3-day no diaper method. We want children to feel when they start to get wet. Never shame them for getting wet. Say “you’re peeing, let’s go sit on the potty”. This will help them identify full bladder means I’m about to go potty. They also typically won’t like the feeling of being wet and will want to avoid it in the future! Take them on a timed schedule, every hour or 2. Use your positive encouragement and praise them right when they sit down, I like to say “great job sitting on the potty!” With smiles and claps. Have a 20-30 second countdown or song you sing so they know what to expect and when sitting will be over. After your song, countdown, or actually using the toilet, big praise and smiles and claps again for sitting and completing. Our attention reinforces behavior in toddlers, so give them lots of positive attention and encouragement and praise here! Use a small reward like stickers for actually using the toilet. I recommend using a potty seat with attached stairs. A potty topper requires you to help them off and on every time, when we want to encourage independence. This also means their feet are dangling, which isn’t best for support and encouraging relaxing the bowels.
