I tested eight powdered oxygen bleaches to find out which ones are actually worth buying. Best - OxiClean White Revive, Vanish Oxi Action Solid / Mid - Kirkland, regular OxiClean, straight sodium percarbonate (the industry control, and what dry cleaners buy by the barrel), regular Vanish Bottom - Charlie's Soap, Whole Foods 365. Methodology: stained cotton swatches with ten different stains (tomato sauce, sriracha, mustard, kale, turmeric oil, chili oil, red palm oil, waterproof mascara, lipstick, foundation), heat set them with a dryer cycle and baking, then measured color removal with a spectrometer before and after cleaning. Standard industry protocol, ASTM D4265. Each product got tested two ways: added to the wash drum, and as a pre wash soak. Full Results: Top tier (55% stain removal): OxiClean White Revive, Vanish Oxi Action. These separated from the pack because of fluorescent brighteners and how the active ingredients granulate and mix. Mid tier (47%): Kirkland, regular OxiClean, straight sodium percarbonate (the industry control, and what dry cleaners buy by the barrel), regular Vanish. All within half a percent of each other. Bottom tier (40%): Charlie's Soap, Whole Foods 365. Bare bones formulas, weighed down with fillers. Every single swatch performed better washed than soaked. If you're dealing with a stain, wash first, then soak only if you still need to. Don't waste a soak on a stain the wash would have handled anyway, and don't fix the color before you've dealt with the source of the stain. That's the order we follow as dry cleaners.
