A dry cleaner's guide to removing blood stains. With the right approach rooted in science, even stubborn stains are manageable. Fresh Stain: Step 1 — Rinse the stain under cold running water to remove any large physical particles. Hot water will set a blood stain, so always use cold. Step 2 — Apply either hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain, or a stain remover spray that contains the enzyme protease. Let it sit for a full hour before washing. Hydrogen peroxide reacts with catalase in blood, producing oxygen gas that physically tears the stain apart. Protease-based sprays break down blood's protein molecules, making them easier for water to wash away. Step 3 — Use cold water and a good detergent. For extra effectiveness, add powdered oxygen bleach directly to the drum before loading — helpful but not required. Step 4 — Check the garment for any remaining stain before placing it in the tumble dryer. Heat will cook the stain in permanently. Old or Set Stain (for stains that are weeks old or have already been through the dryer, the steps are similar but require more time) Step 1 — Same starting point, flush thoroughly under cold water. Step 2 — Apply hydrogen peroxide or a protease-based stain remover and leave it to work longer than you would with a fresh stain. Hydrogen peroxide will not foam as dramatically on a set stain — that is normal. Step 3 — Wash on the appropriate cycle using cold water and a good detergent. Step 4 — If the stain remains, choose one of these methods Option A — Hydrogen peroxide and air dry: Spray the stain with hydrogen peroxide and leave to air dry indoors. This gradually corrects the color and may require a few rounds. Option B — Oxygen bleach soak (more effective): Fill a bucket or sink with hot water and add a powdered oxygen bleach product, using sodium percarbonate as the active ingredient. This is a dry cleaner’s guide to removing coffee and tea stains: 1) Like removes like, so use a mild acid (white vinegar works great) to tackle these acidic stains first. 2) Wash as recommended. 3) If the coffee doesn’t fully lift, it’s because of the milk and sugar, that combo needs surfactants and enzymes. I tested eight powdered oxygen bleaches to find out which ones are actually worth buying. Best - OxiClean White Revive, Vanish Oxi Action Solid / Mid - Kirkland, regular OxiClean, straight sodium percarbonate (the industry control, and what dry cleaners buy by the barrel), regular Vanish Bottom - Charlie's Soap, Whole Foods 365. Methodology: stained cotton swatches with ten different stains (tomato sauce, sriracha, mustard, kale, turmeric oil, chili oil, red palm oil, waterproof mascara, lipstick, foundation), heat set them with a dryer cycle and baking, then measured color removal with a spectrometer before and after cleaning. Standard industry protocol, ASTM D4265. Each product got tested two ways: added to the wash drum, and as a pre wash soak. Full Results: Top tier (55% stain removal): OxiClean White Revive, Vanish Oxi Action. These separated from the pack because of fluorescent brighteners and how the active ingredients granulate and mix. Mid tier (47%): Kirkland, regular OxiClean, straight sodium percarbonate (the industry control, and what dry cleaners buy by the barrel), regular Vanish. All within half a percent of each other. Bottom tier (40%): Charlie's Soap, Whole Foods 365. Bare bones formulas, weighed down with fillers. Every single swatch performed better washed than soaked. If you're dealing with a stain, wash first, then soak only if you still need to. Don't waste a soak on a stain the wash would have handled anyway, and don't fix the color before you've dealt with the source of the stain. That's the order we follow as dry cleaners.
